Trailer for Jaime Osorio Marquez' EL PARAMO (The Squad). |
The film is the story about a special high mountain command composed of nine experienced soldiers, who are sent to a military base in a desolate high-plains moor of Colombia. After several days, contact is lost and they are believed to be the target of a guerrilla attack.
Federico Duran is one of the film’s producers and found the material through the writer and director of the film, Jaime Osorio Marquez. The script went through the 1st Sundance’s Script Writers Lab in Gijon, Spain with workshops and project programs at Huelva, Guadalajara and Cartagena Film Festivals. The script has journeyed through a three year process from conception to near completion. The film was financed with partners from Argentina and Spain. Additional funds were obtained by FDC (Colombian Film Fund), Ibermedia, and INCAA. Wild Bunch in France is handling all sales.
The original cast was made up of actors from the theater. The goal was to find fresh faces that an international audience could identify with and believe in. The end result is that these soldiers could be from any country around the world. Over the past year, these actors have all grown to become well known television stars in Colombia.
The film was completely shot on location in Parque de los Nevados. Some of the actors experienced health problems due to the harsh conditions and the high altitude of that remote location. The nearest town was Manizales which was almost an hour away by car.
The film’s photography is haunting and beautiful. The film also has a unique and ambient film score. There is a possibility that the music will be released and be available on CD and by downloading at a later date.
The producers are hoping to attend several film festivals. There are also plans to distribute the film in both the US and foreign markets.

“El Paramo” is a film in which the horror itself comes from both the moody and atmospheric locations and from within the soldiers themselves. An interesting film to experience and watch over the next year. |
