ON THE HORRIZON: 'JUAN OF THE DEAD' |
| Filmmaker Alejandro Brugués launches a new Cuban revolution |

50 years after the Cuban Revolution, a new Revolution is about to begin.

Back in our May 2010 MIEDO Digest, we announced another Cuban revolution brewing just 90 miles off our shores. No, Fidel Castro had not gotten a second wind and decided to supplant his brother Raul and recall the spirit of Latin American freedom fighter Simón Bolívar. We were sharing the news that Argentinean filmmaker Alejandro Brugués had begun production on JUAN OF THE DEAD (Juan de los Muertos) - the first horror film ever to be shot on the Island nation of Cuba! And now, as first reported exclusively by Latino Review, the filmmakers have released the official trailer for the milestone film (which we also have below).
Brugués' film revolves around Juan (Alexis Días de Villegas), a 40-year old slacker-turned-entrepreneur who seizes upon a sudden zombie epidemic that has engulfed the Island - a development that is at first suspected of being a dissident orchestrated, U.S. government-back plot - and begins a work-for-hire extermination service along with a cache of his motly friends: Lázaro, Camila, Vladi, La China, and El Primo. Their motto: “We kill your beloved ones…at a reasonable price." [view their teaser/commercial]

Argentine/Cuban writer/director Brugues and his partners created their production company 5a Avenida and secured a whopping $2.3 million for special effects via financing from Spain's La Zanfoña Producciones. The film is a hybrid horror/comedy that pays homage to the zombie masterwork of George A. Romero (who, incidentally, is Cuban American) and the British tongue-in-cheek Shaun of the Dead. The film also stars Jorge Molina, Andrea Duro, Andros Perugorría, Jazz Vilá, and Eliecer Ramírez).
The Spanish-language film was shot entirely in and around the Cuban capital city of Havana on the Red One camera and will be released on 35mm prints. The rarity of the endeavor itself may become a spectacle onto itself among the fanboy/fangirl base that may help the film do respectable business on these shores.
And all this time we were worried about missiles...
