ON THE HORRIZON:
'RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES'

Which species will win the 'Monkey Trials' in Rupert Wyatt's Man vs. Ape sci-fi prequel?

Set in present day San Francisco, experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy unlike any other on which rest the upended destinies of man and primate.

On the first day of summer in the northeast region of the continental United States, it's difficult not to have contemplative thoughts of nature, the larger universe and our singular place in that grand scheme. It is fitting, then, that we bring you a sneak peak at the forthcoming film in a francise that has become the epitome of unrestricted nature gone wild: 'RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.' Starring James Franco (Spider Man 1, 2, & 3, 127 Hours), Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, and Andy Serkisset, the film is set to be unleashed on the public in wide release on August 5th. All hail Caesar!

Imagined as a prequel to the long line of other Ape films that have evolved in the man vs. simian saga, helmer Rupert Wyatt (Subterrain, The Escapist) takes as a point-of-departure a kind of mea culpa parable of humanity's noble but flawed attempt in tinkering with the very genetics of nature in its search for the cure for Alzheimer's, and a not so subtle tip of the hat to the "great debate" of evolution vs. creation (the film's tagline: "Evolution Becomes Revolution"). The film is being released by 20th Century Fox.

Looking at the UK trailer (where the film opens August 12th) it's evident that CGI plays a big role here but then the question becomes: 'how will the special effects factor in over the whole of the movie as compared to its forebearers that relied heavily on traditional prosthetic make-up?' But given the fact that the Oscar-winning visual effects team of WETA (Lord of the Rings, Avatar) is at the wheel, we at least can imagine the apes stand a good chance in winning the battle in the war for our eyeballs.
