| ON THE HORRIZON: 'SUPER 8' |
| J.J. Abrams / Paramount release long-awaited trailer and it delivers! |

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town.

|
After what seems an eternity of short but tasty morsels that provided a teasing glimpse into what may be a kind of return to a 1980's filmmaking aesthetic, Paramount Pictures has released today a full-length trailer of the highly-anticipated J.J. Abrams' secret project 'Super 8.' And we gotta say - the trailer is simply fantastic! Five seconds into the clip and I was immediately taken back to such movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET (Steven Spielberg executive produced via his Amblin Entertainment shingle).

In fact, the movie on the surface as a whole appears to be an homage to the Spielberg tableaux style of visual storytelling: from the scenic middle-American suburban landscapes, to precocious, bike-riding teenagers, railroad crossing junctures, potential alien threat from beyond, stoic military presence, down to the retro, anamorphic-like flaring due to light striking the lens elements, an imperfection which has long been corrected through engineering, but a frequent visual marker reminiscent of films from that decade (although we can safely assume it's not a haphazard mistake or photographic anomaly in this case).
No doubt Abrams will employ the same heavy-handed emotional manipulation often skillfully wielded by Spielberg as the trailer's score suggests (surprisingly not by John Williams but by Michael Giacchino, who hails from Abrams' TV past). And the collaboration, ladies and gentlemen, seems a not so casual 'heir apparent' nod to the Spielberg throne for Abrams, blessed by the ring of the king himself... |

I don't normally cover action/adventure films on these pages, and it could be middle-age nostalgia, but I think we're in for a treat when this thriller hits theaters in wide release when 'IT ARRIVES' on June 10th, and that is worth a mention. |
