With Superhero films currently breaking box office records that leaves one question on my mind. Where is the Latino Superhero? I am totally excited with the announcement of DC’s ‘Blue Beetle‘ featuring the latest Latinx version of the character, Jaime Reyes. But I’m also excited to see what is being dubbed as the first Latino Superhero movie, ‘El Chicano’.

El Chicano (2018)
The trailer looks dope! It reminds me a of a modern day ‘The Crow‘ (1994). ‘El Chicano’ is about a Mexican-American cop, Diego Hernandez (Raúl Castillo), who lost his twin brother Pedro also played by Raúl Castillo, to gang violence. Diego adopts the mantle of a masked avenger to take on a cartel. The film is directed by Ben Hernandez Bray and stars George Lopez, Raúl Castillo (Seven Seconds, We The Animals), Aimee Garcia (Lucifer), Kate Del Castillo (A Miracle in Spanish Harlem, La Reina del Sur) , and Emilio Rivera (Sons of Anarchy).
During a panel discussion at the world premiere of Starz “Vida“, actor Raúl Castillo, who plays a new character Baco on the show, mentioned ‘El Chicano’, “Investors wanted white people, not as ‘El Chicano‘, but in supporting roles in the movie and they couldn’t understand an all Latino cast.”
