A friend just sent me a message “Stay home. Ice is in Union City [New Jersey].” I quickly spread the news throughout my social media to warn my immigrant friends. On the week that president Trump was elected a local teacher finds out that one of her students missed school for a week because he was afraid that his parents were going to get deported. Then there is the constant bombardment on our social media, our news outlets of violent threats to immigrants, children being separated from their families, children dying in those detention camps and finally our president using human beings as political pawns to build a wall or change the immigration policy. All of this is very overwhelming and has caused constant fear in the Latinx community as well as this entire country. This is the time where filmmakers must generate movies to create discussion about the all-out attack that the U.S. is creating with this anti-immigration propaganda that this Trump administration has created.

After watching the trailer of Blumhouse and Hulu’s “Into the Dark: Culture Shock” by Latin Horror’s own Gigi Saul Guerrero “La Muñeca Del Terror”, I was initially very proud of her because she tackled a very realistic experience that many of us, the Latinx family is experiencing in this menacing administration. The trailer was AWESOME as it has this “The Stepford Wives” feel. But what resided with me was the closing line, “We aren’t paid to give them the American Dream. We’re paid to keep them out of it.” To me truthfulness and real life is scarier than the boogie man. Those words, that trailer captured that fear that most of the Latinx community live every day. The fear that we are not wanted in this country and the fear of being harmed.

“Into the Dark: Culture Shock” premiers on July 4^th 2019 on Hulu and you better watch it because it’s a very important film that I would love to discuss with you all.

Synopsis: Told in Spanish and English, this thriller follows a young Mexican woman in pursuit of the American Dream, who crosses illegally into the United States, only to find herself in an American nightmare.
