Causing ‘Delirium’ at film festivals

When Brooklyn and the Bronx connect they make amazing social conscious horror films. LatinHorror attended the Grove Film Festival in Jersey City, New Jersey, and we got to see the NJ premier of Delirium.

The film is directed by Brooklyn native Romeo Ortiz and Bronx native Lani Martinez and their movie explores the effects of bullying which include self-harm and suicide. A subject matter that is affecting our urban communities. According to the 2015 survey on “youth high-risk behavior” by Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “15 percent of Latina adolescents in the U.S. have attempted suicide. That number is much higher when compared to 9.8 percent and 10.2 percent for white and black female teens, respectively. Furthermore, almost 26 percent of Latina teens considered suicide.” This summer, 2018, the CDC declared suicide among Latinas an epidemic. The film also speaks volumes on child abuse but lets not spoil the entire film.

The film is well directed as pacing and character development is on point with the dreaded mood that the film follows. Actress, Jaecinda Ortiz, who wonderfully plays a young girl being interrogated by her therapist, steals every scene with her strong performance and maturity. The cinematography in Delirium is amazing as Romeo Ortiz plays with color, shadows and framing to convey the moods and terror of the film. Even, Lani Martinez’s artwork plays an import part of the film as it is the horrifying reflection of the main characters subconscious. The original score by Johan Macaraeg compliments the film with its eerie tones throughout.

Overall, the film is a great first try for both these filmmakers. Such amazing raw talent. We at LatinHorror loved it and recommend it, especially if it’s playing at a film festival near you. Below you’ll find information on Delirium’s next screening, poster, credits, social media and TRAILER!!!
