On the cusp of retirement, an eccentric mortician recounts several of the strangest stories he’s encountered in his long career, but things take a turn for the phantasmagorical when he learns that the final story – is his own.
I am a sucker for horror anthologies—the good, the bad and the ugly—and have been watching them for some time: Tales of the Crypt (1972), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Creepshow (1982), Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990), Tales of the Hood (1995), V/H/S (2012), XX (2017)… Well, you get it; just bring them on!
Thankfully for me, SHUDDER is hitting hard this Halloween season and just dropped the lusciously twisted trailer & poster for THE MORTUARY COLLECTION, that begins streaming October 15th. ‘Mortuary’ represents the feature debut of writer/director Ryan Spindell, who also contributed to the short film phone platform Quibi and Sam Raimi’s celebrated 50 States of Fright series.
The film stars beloved character actor Clancy Brown, widely recognized as one of the most prolific and versatile performers in Hollywood, and best known for his roles in Highlander, The Shawshank Redemption, and Starship Troopers as well as Brother Justin Crowe on HBO’s Carnivàle, Kelvin Inman on ABC’s Lost, and as the voice of Mr. Krabs in Sponge Bob Square Pants. Brown plays the fittingly named eccentric mortician Montgomery Dark (“Every corpse tells a story”)!
The five twisted tales of terror that make up The Mortuary Collection transports you back to the anthology films of the 70s, with nostalgic inspiration from EC horror comics, Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, and the power of storytelling, and is a Halloween classic in the making.
