Universal Pictures dropped a Super Bowl TV spot of the new M. Night Shyamalan flick, ‘OLD‘. Just like other teasers from Shyamalan film archives this spot contains the DNA of his style of movies: chilling, mysterious, and pushed as a thriller.
‘OLD‘ is about a family vacation gone wrong. Apparently the family ends up at a secluded beach that turns everyone into AARP members. Just kidding. The mysterious beach turns its victim old. According to the synopsis “reducing their entire lives into a single day”. The film is actually based on a graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters called ‘Sandcastle‘.
To me the story reminds me of The Ruins (2008), The Shallows (2016), too many horror movies where gringos are told “not go there” but go because it’s an “exotic” place. This time around it is an international cast that includes: Gael García Bernal (Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Rufus Sewell (Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle), Ken Leung (Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Jupiter Ascending), Abbey Lee (HBO’s Lovecraft Country), Aaron Pierre (Syfy’s Krypton), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Embeth Davidtz (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), Emun Elliott (Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens), Kathleen Chalfant (Showtime’s The Affair) and Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit).
Blinding Edge Pictures is the production company, while M. Night Shyamalan is directing, producing and is the screenplay writer. The film is also produced by Ashwin Rajan (Glass, AppleTV+’s Servant) and Marc Bienstock (Glass, Split). The film’s executive producer is Steven Schneider (Insidious, Paranormal Activity, Pet Sematary).
M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘OLD’ comes out July 23rd, 2021.
